Tot School: B is for . . .

We are slooooowly easing back into our school-time routine after taking some much-needed time off this summer.  (And for those who are wondering why we start so early - it's so that we can enjoy days off and long weekends throughout the school year as needed!)

I spend a great deal of time over the summer thinking and praying about the upcoming school year - things like curriculum choices, scheduling, extracurricular activities, and household management are not things I take lightly.  I am so excited to see these decisions finally come to fruition in the new year!

One thing we are trying out is a new school-day schedule now that there are three students in God Seekers Academy - a seventh grader, a fourth grader, and a preschooler!  (I can't believe how fast they are growing up!)  I have structured our day so that while the big kids are working independently, Noah and I can do "Noah-school".  So far, so good!

For Noah's tot school this year, I will be using Before Five in a Row as our curriculum.  Because we've been doing a lot of berry picking lately, I decided to start with Blueberries for Sal by Robert McCloskey.  We have been reading it over and over this week - so much so that Noah almost has it memorized!  He especially likes the part where the mommies and babies are all mixed up on Blueberry Hill (if you aren't sure what I'm talking about, you should read the book or watch it here)!

In addition to this wonderful story, we've been having fun with the letter B . . .

Here Noah is putting stickers with uppercase and lowercase Bs onto the "B" and "b" on his paper.
He also had fun putting "blueberries" on the B with a bingo dabber.
He traced the lines to bring the bear to the B.
We also did some other preschool things - like coloring shapes.  (I put the coloring page into a plastic page protector so that we can erase it and use it again!)
Noah was VERY proud of himself when he finished putting the numbered blueberry clusters in order from 0-10 without any help!
He also worked on color words - each bear had the color word printed in the corresponding color so he knew what the word said and could color them all in.
He even made his own book to read - all about Little Bear (from Blueberries for Sal) that introduced position words.  He loved putting the cutouts of Little Bear in the right place and then "reading" the book to Mommy and Daddy.

Now this may look like a lot . . . but remember, it was spread out over several days.  And we only did these activities as long as it was fun for Noah.  My philosophy of homeschooling in the early years is that I want to impart a love of learning, discovering, and exploring new things.  I do recognize that as Noah sees his older siblings with their schoolwork, he naturally wants to do "school" too - hence the worksheets and other activities.  But the best part of our school day is the times we can cuddle up on the couch with a book (or five) to read together!

A day in the life of Noah

If you ask your two-year-old to put his dirty dishes in the sink after a meal . . .

they might just show up in an unexpected location!
(At least he didn't put them in the trash can . . . he LOVES throwing things away for me!)

And in unrelated news, today Noah learned how to read words in the "at" family:
hat, mat, bat, cat, sat, rat

He was so proud of himself!
(And I was just a bit proud of him too!)

SCHOLA fun has begun again!

Co-op time is here once again!  It's hard to believe, but this is our fourth year with our homeschool co-op . . . we all look forward to the beginning of the new school year to see our old friends and meet new ones!

This fall, Lael's classes include Genetics, Elections, and a gym class.
This week, they made a model of DNA using paper clips . . . pretty cool.  (Why didn't we do things like that when I was in school???)
Jaden has a class on Elections too (his is taught by Mom), as well as one on famous scientists and their discoveries . . . oh, and the ever-popular gym class!
Noah is still too little for actual classes, but he still has lots of fun playing with his friends :)

Pennypacker Mills

Last week we experienced a piece of Pennsylvania history when we visited Pennypacker Mills in Schwenksville, PA.  This estate was the summer home of Gov. Samuel W. Pennypacker, who served as governor of Pennsylvania from 1903-1907.

We visited in conjunction with "History Adventures in the Summer", a hands-on history program by Pennypacker Mills.  The theme on the day of our visit?  The General Store - and we had so much fun!

The staff gave the kids a general overview of the general store - where things were located and what kinds of merchandise could be purchased - as well as sharing a snapshot as to what life was like at the turn of the 20th century.

After some instructions, each child grabbed a basket and a shopping list and were turned loose to shop!

There were all kinds of tasks - like weighing out dry beans . . .
. . . and cool things to see, like this telephone.
Noah watched all the big kids scurry around from the comfort of his stroller.
One favorite activity:  grinding grain by hand into flour.  (My kids were thankful that we have an electric grain grinder at home!)
Even Noah got in on a bit of the grain grinding action!
Noah was quite entertained by the "horse" (made of wood) tied to a hitching post - he couldn't understand why the hitching post wouldn't "let go" of the rope when he asked it to! ;)
Lael and Jaden also tried their hand at using a pen and ink to write . . . then decided that they'd stick with pencils for their schoolwork!

After they completed all the tasks on their shopping list, they went to the front counter - Jaden wasn't quite sure how to take the general store clerk . . . she talked to him like he was a boy of that time period!
We also got to tour the governor's home but have no pictures (none were allowed inside).

It was a fantastic field trip . . . and a wonderful glimpse into what life was like 100 years ago!

Opening Ceremony Fun!

We have been anxiously awaiting the start of the 2012 Olympics in London . . . it's such an exciting time!  So we decided to make some yummy treats to enjoy during the opening ceremony - treats with an international flair!

Tostones (fried plantains) . . . Lael learned how to make these in her co-op cooking class and insisted that we include them in our menu!
Spanikopita are little pockets of spinach and feta goodness surrounded by layers of phyllo dough . . . I'd never made them before, but we all loved them!
Queso fundido - a hot cheese dip with roasted red peppers and chorizo sausage - another family favorite!
For dessert, we HAD to have an Olympic flag cake - Lael and Jaden did a great job making the rings!
(For the Beijing Olympics, we made the rings out of M&Ms - but we decided that we like the fruit version much better!)
Unfortunately, once the party - and the opening ceremony - started, we got caught up in all the excitement and I forgot to take any more pictures!  Ooops!

It's the beginning of the 2012-13 school year at God Seekers Academy . . . I'm beginning my 7th year of homeschooling already -  and I'm still trying to figure out where the time has gone!

Every year on the first day of school I try to fix a fun breakfast . . . this year we had French toast kebabs!

We're ready for some exciting adventures this year!

Science Fair Fun!

One of our final co-op activities of the year is the annual SCHOLA science fair.  This is the second year that Lael and Jaden participated in the science fair, and although the days leading up to the science fair are always filled with a flurry of activity, it's always a fun night!

This year we had a special guest - Mr. Frank DeFreitas (he's a member of our church) - who shared with us about holography . . . amazing stuff!
At the cafe, kids could choose a cookie by naming an element (or just picking their favorite color)!
We've been studying the human body this year, so Lael and Jaden each chose to do a "display of knowledge" about something relating to the human body.

Lael's project was on nutrition and digestion:
One of the co-op moms was the judge who talked with Lael about her project.
 Great job, Lael!
 Jaden's project was on muscles . . .
. . . and here he is with his judge.
Great job, Jaden!
Noah spent a lot of time in his stroller at the science fair so that he couldn't do any damage!  But he still had lots of fun - he especially liked looking at the goldfish that was at one student's display . . . and he ate lots of popcorn at the cafe!
What a fun night!  Congratulations to all who participated!
